As of 2016, Michigan ranks 36th in the country for the population with bachelor’s degree or higher at only 28.3%. As employers face critical shortages of workers at all levels, many of the jobs requiring a four-year Michigan Week Luncheon ft. Dr. Edward Montgomery, President, WMU - Ed_Montgomery_1degree or higher are going unfilled because of a shortage of qualified candidates.

Dr. Edward Montgomery will share his insights to the challenges of educating our future workforce as he is concluding his first year as President of Western Michigan University. He will also discuss the challenges higher education has with the decline of state funding over several years and the burden of increasing cost of tuition on students.

Western Michigan has looked at innovative ways to partner with businesses and focused on making students valuable to employers upon graduation as one of the top 100 best national universities and best bang for the buck, according to Washington Monthly.  Additionally, U.S. News & World Report has designated WMU one of America’s best national universities for 27 consecutive years and has placed it in the top-tier of those universities since 2011.

Dr. Montgomery brings a unique perspective to the challenges Michigan’s automotive-driven economy faces as the former “the Auto Czar”. He was appointed to that position in 2009 by the President when he was named the Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers. He also served as the Chief Economist for the US Department of Labor from ’97-‘99 and later Deputy Secretary of Labor.

From being a world-renowned economist to his experience with the auto industry to the challenges facing education and workforce development, Dr. Montgomery will share with us his thoughts as the leader of one of our State’s largest universities.

This event is also in conjunction with the Western Michigan University’s Alumni Association who will be inviting graduates from the Metro Area.

Dr. Edward B. Montgomery became the ninth president of Western Michigan University on Aug. 1, 2017. He came to WMU from Georgetown University, where he had served as dean and professor of economics at that university's McCourt School of Public Policy since 2010.

Montgomery earned a bachelor's degree in economics, with honors, from Pennsylvania State University and both master's and doctoral degrees in economics from Harvard University.

During a more than 35-year academic career, Montgomery has held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon and Michigan State Universities as well as the University of Maryland, winning teaching awards five times over those years. During his tenure at Maryland, he served for six years—2003-2009—as dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

As noted earlier, he also served in leadership capacities in the US Department of Labor and the inter-agency White House Council for Auto Communities and Workers.
